Threads pg1
This year’s “Winter-Holiday-2022/23-Cards” were designed as a comic, with each card being a panel in a set of 77. The story is a bit of a combo of the Ukrainian folktales “The Mitten” and “The Christmas Spider.”

All cards were drawn digitally, then printed and coloured with watercolours, pencil crayon, and glitter paint. I originally wanted a “Happy Holidays” message on the back to be outlined in yarn, but tests did not show promising results, so instead I outlined the ‘card panels’ in yarn.
These were the first cards completed – I prioritized mailing out cards going to more distant locations, and, trying to beat the clock, needed cards I could complete quickly! So I actually did these ones first (then jumped back to the beginning of the story). Small/fewer critters, less time for card construction!
The number and type of animals change in different tellings of the tale; a frog was one of the creatures I decided to skip. I think I may have missized a few of them (but maybe there were babies/adults or over/underdeveloped animals).
The goat is probably my favorite creature, so I use ’em again at the end (or, “beginning of the online”) comic to prevent the ending from being spoiled online.
The (Fencepost Jumping) Spider was chosen for it’s “cute” look and ability to jump (important in the previous page). They don’t use webs to catch prey, but they can produce silk. Perfect for decorating a tree.
Happy (belated) Holidays!
“Threads” is a card-comic based on the Ukrainian folktales “The Mitten” and “The Christmas Spider.” This particular panel is a ‘back-page’ designed as a placeholder for when I uploaded the story and didn’t want to spoil the ending on this site! The comic starts over here. Happy readings!
